St. Giles of Assisi
Died: 1262
A native of Assisi, Italy, Giles was one of the earliest followers of St. Francis, from whom he received the habit in 1208. He accompanied Francis on many of his missions around Assisi, made a pilgrimage to Compostela, visited Rome and the Holy Land, and then made an unsuccessful visit to Tunis to convert the Saracens. The Christians in Tunis, fearful of the repercussions of his religious fervor, forced him back on a boat as soon as he landed. He spent the rest of his life living in Italy, living from about 1243 at the Monte Rapido hermitage on the outskirts of Perugia, where he died in 1263. He experiences ecstacies, had a vision of Christ at Cetona, and is considered the most perfect example of the primitive Franciscan. He is spoken of at length in "The Little Flowers of St. Francis" and Francis called him his "Knight of the round table." Known for his austerity and silence, his "The Golden Sayings of Brother Giles" is noted for its humor, deep understanding of human nature, and optimism.

Dear Giles, I commenced reading St Francis of Assisi - A Biography authored by Omer Englebert on Easter Monday, 12 April 1993 in Daylesford a township of nealry 2,000 people in the state of Victoria, Australia. I completed this heart-touching book on Sunday, 11 July 1992 at home in Endeavour Hills, Melbourne. I discovered you in the pages of this book and you remained in my heart ever since. I decided to re-read it commencing on Sunday, 12 Deember 2010 and what a lovely experience it gave me.
Precious Giles, I have a friend in Sydney living a life of hell, heroin hell. Timmy was born and raised in Sydney's working class district (Ryde) to a Finnish family on Sunday, 4 April 1977. His father was an alcoholic but not violent. There was very little homely love, warmth or comfort and growing up in housing commission districts of Sydney's working class was very tough. Timmy was influenced by his heroin addicted brother to smoke heroin as it isn't addicitive, well, soon Timmy was addicted to heroin which led him to 10 years of heroin addiction of $400 a day.
Timmy went into a rehab hospital and he was cured of heroin addiction. Timmy returned to his family and freinds and we all started all over again from where we left off ten years ago. Sadly, early last year Timmy returned back to hell, heroin hell. Timmy went from a well paid job, nice home, loving family and friends to sleeping on the park benches.Where there is life there is hope, so let us not lose hope in Timmy and the power of prayer to snatch him back from the power of heroin and restore Timmy back to us, his heartbroken family & friends. AMEN
