Protogenes was a priest of Edessa (Urfa, Turkey) who suffered exile together with another priest, (Saint) Eulogius. The two were banished to Antinoe (Isna), Egypt by the Roman emperor Valens (364-378), who was an adherent of the Arian heresy that denied the divinity of Christ. During this exile, Protogenes founded a school in Egypt. Valens' successor, Theodosius I (379-395), recalled from exile both Eulogius and Protogenes, with the latter becoming bishop of Carrhae, Mesopotamia (Harran, Turkey). Eulogius became bishop of Edessa.
