Feastday: September 20

Feastday: September 20

The evangelization of Korea began during the 17th century through a group of lay persons. A strong vital Christian community flourished there under lay leadership until missionaries arrived from the Paris Foreign Mission Society.

During the terrible persecutions that occurred in the 19th century (in 1839, 1866, and 1867), one hundred and three members of the Christian community gave their lives as martyrs. Outstanding among these witnesses to the faith were the first Korean priest and pastor, Andrew Kim Taegon, and the lay apostle, Paul Chong Hasang.

Among the other martyrs were a few bishops and priests, but for the most part lay people, men and women, married and unmarried, children, young people, and the elderly. All suffered greatly for the Faith and consecrated the rich beginnings of the Church of Korea with their blood as martyrs.

Pope John Paul II, during his trip to Korea, canonized these martyrs on May 6, 1984, and inserted their feast into the Calendar of the Universal Church.

Dear Sts. Andrew Kim Taegon and companions, happy feast-day. All Asian Catholics are proud of your witnessing to Christ in the face of terrible opposition. Pray for me to get over the obstacles and troubles in my working life. Please help me to give my students the best possible options for their future success. I need patient endurance. What were his last words? I was reading, "In 1846, at the age of 25, he was tortured and beheaded near Seoul on the Han River. His last words were: ??????"

St. Andrew Kim and companions were very courageous in their faith. This article gives a brief description of their lives. Sufficient to have some idea about the martyrs.

St. Andrew Kim Taegon and companions, as a Catholic of Asian descent, I'm truly proud to remember you today. I pay tribute to Blessed Pope John Paul, for honouring these martyrs who are so far away geographically, from Rome, meaning that our Church is truly universal. St. Andrew, pray for the pilgrim Church in all Asian countries, where subtle persecution, is experienced. In some countries, it is blatant, brutal and sadly, even violent. As the story says, the Church of Christ in Korea, as indeed all over the world, was founded on the blood of Martyrs. We love you and pray to you St. Andrew, help all the sick and suffering in Karachi (Pakistan) and nearby areas that have been affected by the recent floods. Give me the special assistance I need in organising some financial aid for them. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

G-d bless the martyrs in Korea and all who die for their love of G-d. We take so many things for granted in the USA. We can go to church to worship freely, but we don't. We can pray and say thank you Lord for all our graces and blessings, but we don't. We can love and help our neighbors who are sick, hungry, homeless and lonely, but we don't. Our purpose in life is to love and do G-d's will. When are we going to wake up and love G-d above everything else so we can have eternal life in heaven? Pray, love, obey and believe!
Pray, pray, pray because it is power.
    Thanks,
    acm
