LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Any possible robot-world-domination is not likely in the near future. However, the likelihood that robots will start taking jobs away from humans is closer to home.

According to one of the world's best-known AI researchers, Baidu chief scientist Andrew Ng, "we really ought to worry about more robot truck drivers than the Terminator."

The AI switchover in the job market will be much faster and more disruptive than the industrial revolution.

"Artificial intelligence is likely to start having an important effect on society over the next five to 10 years," according to Murray Shanahan, a professor of cognitive robotics with Imperial College in an interview with WIRED. "It's hard to predict exactly what's going on, but we can be pretty sure that these technologies are going to impact society quite a bit."

There are about three million truck drivers in the United States, according to the American Trucking Association. The self-driving vehicle is becoming more and more common as different automobile manufacturers are creating their edition. What happens when someone creates a self-driving semi-truck or bus?

Other incidents where robots are replacing humans is a robot butler in Cupertino, California's Aloft Hotel and data-shifting computers for paralegals.

We are entering a "second machine age," and the increasing rate of changes from digital technologies will leave millions of medium-and-low skilled workers behind, according to two MIT academics, Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee.

"If AI really starts taking jobs, retraining all of those workers could present a major challenge," stated Ng. Talking about robots taking over the world through violence, is "a distraction from the conversation about...serious issues," many people being out of work because of artificial intelligence.
