LOS ANGELES, CA (August 20, 2010) - A scoreless game and subsequent "draw" result against Our Lady of Good Counsel was the only blemish that stood between the Archbishop Spalding High School (Levern, MD) girls soccer team and a perfect season in 2009. And with a state championship win and no losses last season, it is no surprise that the Cavaliers are a trendy pick as one of the nation's top team again in 2010.
Last week, the CatholicSportsNet.com audience sounded off in the CSN viewer poll and chose Archbishop Spalding as the Catholic high school girls soccer team they believe should be preseason No. 1 in the team top ten rankings. Topping the likes of Immaculate Heart Academy (NJ) and St. Agnes (TN), Spalding solidified itself as the practical and popular choice to rule again this season.
The current version of the Cavs will be led by three Division-I women's soccer commits, including the team's top scorer, senior Maggie Morrison (Vanderbilt). Spalding, which is ranked No. 4 in the ESPN Rise complete national preseason rankings, returns a total of five starters from last year's 20-0-1 team, including the aforementioned Morrison and record-setting keeper Jocelyn McCoy. Spalding has gone 76-3-7 over the past four years, and figures to remain a power in Maryland for years to come as the junior varsity was perfect last year.
