One in five Americans now on food stamps

More than a sixth of all Americans are on food stamps for the 35 straight month in a row, data from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Since September of 2011 through July 2014, more than 46 million Americans have been in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). As of July, 46,486,434 are in the SNAP program.

The number of individuals participating in the program declined slightly from June by about 10,000, the number of households that are in the program in that same time frame increased from 22,714,042 in June to 22,715,583 in July.
In 1969, the average monthly participation in the SNAP program was only 2,878,000-or 1.4% of the population. In 2013 it had increased by more than 1,550%-now 15.1% of the population is in the program.
In 2013, 20% of all American households, or one in five, is in the SNAP program.
