LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - In a recent twitter post, popular female rapper, Azealia Banks blatantly stated, "I'm really a witch." She suggested that before black Americans' ancestors traveled to the United States, they believed in something far different than Christianity.

Despite the uproar she received, she continued on to say that "Jews and Blacks have been persecuted over and over again throughout history because they have the most magic... We have REAL supernatural powers, and the sooner we ALL learn to cultivate them and access them, the sooner we can REALLY fix shit."

This idea of being apart of something greater than oneself is where the true endearment of being a witch comes from.

During the rise of the feminist movements in the '70s, the women activists often expressed politics openly holding the "fearsome power of a 'witch.'"

"To reclaim the word witch is to reclaim our right, as women, to be powerful," wrote Starhawk, in her 1979 book "The Spiral Dance." "To be a witch is to identify with 9 million victims of bigotry and hatred and to take responsibility for shaping a world in which prejudice claims no more victims."

In a largely male-dominated, patriarchal country, the notion of being feared and stronger than man was an intoxicating one.

"I think that part of the power of the word is that it refers to a kind of power that is not legitimized by the authorities," Starhawk explained to The Guardian. "Even though not all witches are women, and a lot of men are witches, it seems to connote women's power in particular. And that's very scary in a patriarchal world - the kind of power that's not just coming from the hierarchical structure, but some kind of inner power. And to use it to serve the ends that women have always stood for, like nurturing and caring for the next generation - that, I think, is a wonderfully dangerous prospect."

From a practiced religion to a feminist symbol, witchcraft was spreading throughout the country during the '60s and '70s; and it's is back.

Tarot cards can be purchased and practiced in popular urban stores, the fantasy of having power is potent, The American Horror Story's third season, Coven was it's most popular season full of girl power, a popular Tumblr blog gives magical advice and teen magazines give tarot tutorials.

The Bible states, "Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I [am] the LORD your God," Leviticus 19:31

As the popularity of practicing witchcraft grows, it is important to remember, no matter the supposed empowerment provided to women, this practice is evil and not favored as we follow Jesus.
