LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - While Spanish remains the largest sole language at 12%-38.4 million speak it at home-languages from Pakistan like Arabic and Urdu are among the fastest growing.

The report also revealed that nearly half of all school-age children in California speak a language other than English at home. A third of all school-age children in Texas and Nevada also do not speak English at home, according to numbers from the Census Bureau.
One of the report's authors, Steven Camarota, said that this increase is no accident, but is instead the result of a deliberate policy by the administration of President Barack Obama which has encouraged a greater number of illegal immigrants to enter the country.
"It is important to understand that the enormous growth in foreign language use reflects past policy decisions," said Camarota.
"Allowing in over one million new legal immigrants a year and to a lesser extent tolerating illegal immigration has important implications for preserving a common language. For too long we have given little consideration to whether continuing this level of immigration, mostly legal, hinder the assimilation of immigrants and their children."
The surge of illegal South and Central American minors crossing into the U.S. during 2014 from Mexico shows that this is not likely to change, and puts a great strain on courts and schools in affected states.
The border states aren't the only places that have been impacted by the surge. Several school districts reported large increases in their student pool that were unexpected.
Most of the minors are of school age, and usually this means that a school may see several more classrooms filled than expected. Many children have never been in school, and most lack any or have only basic English skills.
