LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The CDC has reported that there are around 20 million new STD cases every year in the United States. These infections can persist for a long time, and some victims are not aware that they even have an infectious disease that can be easily spread to others.

Combat corruption with moral education; send a Bible to a child, or another person in need.

The CDC looked at data from 2008 and found that the eight most commonly transmitted STDs were: chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus (HBV), genital herpes, HIV, human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis and trichomoniasis.

Roughly 50.5 million of those currently infected by STDs are men, and 59.5 million infected are women, which means that about 110 million Americans have an STD at any time.

Half of these new STD infections are with people between the ages of 15-24, and among this age group, gonorrhea is the most commonly reported, and is the second most commonly reported STD in the United States.

Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD at 1.4 million infections in 2012, but since many of those infected with the disease don't exhibit symptoms, that number could actually be far higher. There are roughly 457 cases of chlamydia per 100,000 people.

Infections of HIV and hepatitis B are much rarer. Less than 50,000 people are newly infected each year.

The CDC estimates that STDs cost roughly $16 billion in direct medical costs per year.
